WARNING I'M HUMAN I DO MAKE MISTAKES, BUT THESE ARE MY BEST SO FAR.. In Oak Terrace
Old and alone, she sits at nights nodding before the television. The house is quiet now. She knits, rises to put the kettle on, watches a cowboy’s killing, reads the local Births and Deaths, and falls asleep at ‘Growing stockpiles of war-heads’. A world that threatens worse ills fades. She dreams of a life spent in the one house: suffers again poverty, sickness, abandonment, a child’s death, a brother’s brain melting to madness. Seventy years of common trouble; the kettle sings. At midnight she says her silly prayers, and takes her teeth out, and collects her night-things. Tony Connor Title: Criticize the poem above by describing the imagery and diction portrayed in the poem 'In Oak Terrace'. In this poem by Tony Connor we see life through an old woman’s eyes and therefore we find the themes of death, old age and loneliness. These themes are depicting a picture for us, for example the old woman is watching television. The poet in ‘In Oak Terrace’ is__________________ (attitude of the poet)___________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________. ‘In Oak Terrace’ is mostly written in contemporary writing, while it also has some old diction for example by the use of the word “war-heads” the poet is emphasizing the fact that the woman is old and she has experienced world war two, this is the symbolic meaning of this phrase while the literal meaning would be that “war-heads” are explosives. By the use of the phrase “Local births and Deaths” the poet is showing us these opposites and she is nearing to death since she is old. In paragraph three the poet is describing the woman’s life, explaining that she had a difficult life. The poet by the use of list shows us the different things that the old woman has gone through. For example it is said that the woman has been abandoned, she was abandoned by her husband, this could be because he had died or just simply left her, and she was abandoned by her children who are older now and don’t visit. In this poem the image of death predominates it, for example she is watching “a cowboy’s killing”, she is reading the local births and deaths and she also mention’s her child’s death. This reflects the mood of the poem because it makes an emphasis on sadness, lowliness and waiting for death and a new life. The different images in the poem include nearly all the different senses. The old woman is watching television and this brings sight into the picture while the “kettle sings” and the old woman is listening to the television, and this brings the sense of sound to life. The woman has the lack of human connection in her life and this brings the sense of touch into the picture. In this poem you can find different types of imagery such as when the poet says “brain melting to madness” by this he is using a metaphor to tell us that her brother’s mental health started deteriorating slowly until he was very sick. He also personificates the kettle when he says that the “kettle sings”, emphasizing the fact that the old woman is alone and in need of a companion, so she makes the kettle a sort of companion. You can also find assonance in the poem when the poets says “Old and alone” when starting the poem which gives the poem a sad tone and repeats the ‘o’ sound. Tony Connor also alliterates the ‘s’ sound in the last paragraph when “she says her silly prayers”, the poet is also giving his opinion when saying this because he is classifying them as “silly prayers”, because she has been saying her prayers her whole life , but only difficult things comes to her life. This shows that she is waiting for death and an afterlife. “In Oak Terrace” ___________________________________(Conclusion)___________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________. Title: Binge-drinking
Binge drinking is the modern definition of drinking alcoholic beverages with the intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol. Statistics show that Malta ranks fifth in the world in the consumption of alcohol. In the present day statistics show that there are more underage binge drinkers then ever according to a recent report. Almost half of the 15 year olds living in England admit to regularly binging on alcohol. There are many reasons why people binge drink. Too many drinking is part of a Saturday night out, these are social drinkers who regularly drink binge on alcohol for pleasure. Another reason why people binge drink is so that they forget their problems because they are stressed, or to become less shy around people, and also to get rid of any inhabitations. Some people fall to peer pressure because if all your friends are drinking a person would feel left out and so would also start binging. The media does not make it any easier to help remove the problem of bring e drinking because bringing is portrayed as a positive thing in adverts where beverage companies which make it seem more attractive and films where characters are drinking throughout the movie or series. A problem for officials is that many underage drinkers sometimes carry a fake ID. This makes it more difficult to catch the underage drinkers. There are many effects of binge drinking to the human body and behavior. Some of these include; long-term liver damage. A true story coming from England is that a 19 year old needed liver transplant because she had been bingeing since the age of 14. Binge drinking also increases the possibility of having a heart attack or stroke. Bringing also brings about anti-social behavior, for example the late night fights and vandalism. Drinking and driving is another dangerous aspect that we face in the world today. There are terrible accidents where one of the drivers would be driving drunk, some of these may also be fatal due to the speeds that come with drinking and driving. Sometimes after two people become intoxicated with alcohol they can have unprotected sexual relationships. This can bring about disease unwanted babies and also if only one person is intoxicated or only one person wants to have a sexual relationship, rape. There are many things being done by the government and other non-governmental organizations to educate people and make them more aware of the negative effects of binge drinking. This is done by showing adverts on television and billboards. Also fines are given to drivers who are found drinking and driving and this is found out by road blocks done mostly on Friday’s and Saturday nights where police officers conduct tests to see if the drivers are driving under the influence of alcohol. Fines are also given to those shopkeepers and barmen who sell alcoholic drinks to under age people. There are many laws and restrictions including one that started to be enforced this summer where after 9pm no one is allowed with any kind of alcoholic drink out of doors not even in places of entertainment. Alcoholic drinks are can be dangerous if not consumed at a coordinated manner and binge drinking is a very bad habit. Title:‘If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem!’ Discuss with reference to the environment.
Environmental issues are a major concern to the human population today. Some of the problems caused by the human population are; the green house effect or global warming, depletion of the ozone layer and Acid rain. These are mainly caused by deforestation which is when rainforests are cut down and our poor waste management. The greenhouse effect is the enhancement of Earth's natural greenhouse effect by the addition of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels. This encourages extreme weather such as Droughts, floods and hurricanes. Italy lately has been having a tropical climate as opposed to the Mediterranean climate which it should be having. There is a good number of things which we could be doing such as using A+ appliances that consume less electricity which results in burning less fossil fuels to produce this electricity, and using energy saving bulbs instead of the filament lamps. Other simple things such as turning off monitors and televisions instead of leaving them on standby, using microwaves instead of ovens, taking showers instead of baths to use less water and taking your own shopping bag to the shops and therefore producing less plastic waste from thrown away plastic bags. Other things like insulating walls so that you minimize the use of heaters and air-conditions and car pooling. Much more carbon dioxide is found in our atmosphere in the present day than in previous years. This mostly because trees are being cut down and therefore since trees remove carbon dioxide during transpiration there are less trees to perform this process and so the greenhouse effect is increased. The Amazon which is called the lung of the earth is being cut down rapidly and in previous years has been cut down by big name companies such as McDonalds and Burger King which then use this land as pasture land for their cows. The solution to this is by planting more trees and for these companies as they have done to use other land available as pasture land. We should also encourage people to stop buying objects and furniture made from timber obtained from the Amazon. A big problem to the human race is waste management. It is said that the trash we are producing is enough to fill up enough trucks to make a line to the moon. By this poor waste management we are releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere. The solutions to managing waste and minimizing waste disposal are more government regulation and the use of more waste separation into; biodegradable, recyclable and other waste. The problem with the human population is that our values concerning the environment, in previous times more visible than today are that humans are at the top of the food chain, then animals that are useful to us, after them other animals, plants and minerals. Which should not be the case because if minerals become scarce plants would not be able to grow and animals would have nothing to eat and die and then we would not be able to live. We should all feel responsible because ‘If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem!’. The ‘Earth song’ by Michael Jackson is a perfect example where he says if we have ever noticed “The crying earth, the weeping shores”. |
